A Historic Week for South Africa: Honorary DSc, a Hard-Won NHI Bill, and the Long March Toward Health Equity
Yesterday South Africa made history and passed a revolutionary Bill on National Health Insurance (NHI) in the National Council of Provinces, making health care accessible to all and free at the point of care. It’s a prepayment system that will ensure access to affordable quality health for all. Once fully implemented, no one will be bankrupted while trying to access health care. The NHI Fund will purchase services and pool resources (funds, facilities, equipment) to ensure the public and private providers deliver services to all. Very proud of our government and ANC achievement. Yes, it took 30 years to get this far, despite the objections of the anti-equality groups. We shall all be equal in our quest to access quality health care.
