This past week, I had the pleasure of receiving an honorary Doctor of Science in Medicine and Health Sciences (DSc) from the University of Stellenbosch, citing my contribution to the transformation of the South African health system from the Mandela administration. I received the honour on behalf of all those who walked the long, difficult journey of transformation that not only changed the system but also the transformers. This was the time we developed new post-apartheid policies, new programs that enabled women and children to receive free healthcare and universal primary healthcare, and access to medicines at a time when many were dying of AIDS. Thank you, Stellenbosch University leaders and faculty of medicine and health sciences, for the honor.
